Best Microwave – Top 4 Picks

Filed under Best Microwaves by Reese

The conventional microwave ovens are to re-heat leftovers and popping popcorn. These days, with the convection technology, microwave ovens have improved on the one main traditional weak spot for microwaves – surface browning.

Having said that, this feature adds significantly to the price so if you just want to reheat and defrost food, a standard countertop microwave oven would be both cost effective and an appropriate pick. This is because top-rated countertop microwave ovens usually cost roughly $100 less than comparable sized microwave ovens with convection.

I have divided the best microwave ovens into four categories:
Best full-size microwave = Panasonic Genius NN-H765 BF
Most stylish stainless-steel microwave = Sharp R-426HS
Best mid-sized microwave oven = Sharp R-305KS
Best convection microwave oven = Sharp R-820JS

Best Budget Over-the-Range Microwave – Sharp 950-Watt 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot Over-the-Range Microwave

Filed under Sharp Microwaves by Reese

It’s hard to find any other satisfying over the range microwave at this price. Sharp 950-Watt 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot Over-the-Range Microwave is a great bargain!

Sharp 950-Watt 1.4-Cubic-Foot Over-the-Range Microwaves

This microwave is pretty basic, it has all the basic functions a normal middle range counter top microwave has, which are – defrosting, reheating and cooking. It’s designed for those people who want to save precious counter top space by mounting up the microwave but don’t want to spend the price of a standard over the range microwave oven.

Sharp 950-Watt 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot Over-the-Range Microwave is not any lighter than other over the range microwaves, needs two people to install (unless you’re very strong), and looks quite nice with the streamlined design. Only the door seems a bit light, so be gentle when closing it.

If you’re concerned that 950 watt just doesn’t seem enough, remember that those microwave ovens that have 1100 watt or 1200 watt are bigger (usually 2 cubic ft) while this one is only 1.4 cubic ft. So it cooks just as fast, only less at one time.

For such a budget price, it came with the range light bulbs installed, a powerful vent, and easy controls. It works great with popcorn too. Can’t really complain that there is only one setting for the exhaust fan, and that it can be rather loud for quiet homes. They could’ve thrown in the filter as well though, but that can be bought for a few dollars.

For an over the range microwave that costs less than $300, it’s better to get the Sharp 950-Watt 1-2/5-Cubic-Foot Over-the-Range Microwaves than any other cheap brands. And if you’re lucky enough to chance upon a coupon or free shipping with Amazon, this is a steal!

Best Over the Range Microwave – LG Over The Range Microwaves

Filed under LG Microwaves by Reese

The LG Over The Range Microwaves, 1.6 cubic ft. and 2.0 cubic ft., are the best over the range microwaves I’ve seen yet. I prefer the 2.0 cubic ft., it has more room for cooking and a few more features.

LG Over The Range Microwaves

This model is really big. You’ll need two strong guys to install it. But it is very easy to install and looks attractive over the stove.

LG Over The Range Microwave has all the advanced features you’ll ever need, designed to suit those who not only cook and reheat in the microwave, but also use the microwave for many other purposes.

There are sensor cooking and sensor reheat features with this microwave, which will shut off automatically when the food is done, and you can preset the keep warm function to follow the cooking or reheat function too, in case you don’t get back in time.

The defrost function has three settings to it, for chicken, vegetables or beef. There’s also a soften button for softening butter, cheese, ice cream and so on. Now you can start baking on the spur of the moment without having to let the butter soften on the counter.

The 2.0 cubic ft. model has a shelf for you to cook more items at the same time. Perfect when used together with sensor cooking or sensor reheating, and cut meal preparation time into half.

If there’s anything to grumble over this microwave oven, it’s the noise. It isn’t very loud but it is louder than most microwaves. The door shuts noisily but if you are gentler, it is quieter.

You don’t get many reviews out there for over the range microwave ovens, but the LG Over The Range Microwaves has got quite a lot compared to others. Although it is not best rated by consumer sites, more users have given this a high rating at Amazon.

Sharp R-930 Convection Microwave

Filed under Sharp Microwaves by Reese

Since the 1990s, a microwave oven has become a ubiquitous kitchen appliance. What’s more, when microwave energy is combined convection power, it is an ideal tool for home users, making not only baking, roasting and broiling quick but also cooking and reheating equally fast. And doing all these to perfection is Sharp R-930 Convection Microwave.

Pros: Various cooking functions, intelligent computing system, smart sensor and power adjustment

Cons: Unintuitive touch pad, carry-in warranty and durability

SHARP R-930 Convection Microwave

Sharp R-930 Convection Microwave

Fair Design

Accommodating with various design backdrops are the model’s color schemes of black (R-930AK), white (R-930AW) and stainless steel (R-930CS, premium price). With a capacity of 1.5 cubic feet, the interior of R-930 is spacious yet smaller than standard ovens. However, it’s big enough if you’re not of royalty, and getting another basic-featured microwave to work in a party is advisable.

Various Cooking Functions and Intelligent Computing System

Mixing microwave energy with convection power opens R-930 to a wide range of functions, as its convection system capable of baking, broiling, browning and crisping. Aided with an intelligent computing system, this microwave adjusts the different cooking times and their required temperatures automatically. It can even cook popcorn, though not as compatible with different types of popcorn as the manufacturer says it is.

Unintuitive Controls

Sharp R-930 Convection Microwave comes with 7-Digit, 2-Color Interactive Display, but the word “interactive” may not be what it implies. Users have said that confusing to navigate through, and that the touch pad is not intuitive. Nonetheless, once you’ve painstakingly familiarized yourself with the controls, then cooking tips, programming procedures and custom help system are available.

Smart Sensor and Power Adjustments

In its Smart & Easy Sensor, it detects cooking/reheating periods accordingly and then calibrates the power level needed from an available range of 11 levels, avoiding waste of energy and saving a few cents from your electrical bill. The reheat sensor makes sure that the food is reheated thoroughly, lest you taste burning hot and icy cold turkey simultaneously.

Warranty

One irritable downside is its carry-in warranty, requiring you to bring the convection microwave to an authorized dealer for repairs. Weighing 60 pounds, that’s not a welcomed move. Even with warranties of 1 year for full; 2 years for parts; and 5 years for magnetron tube, durability issues keep popping out more frequently after the warranty periods.

Conclusion

Gone are the days when a microwave or an oven could last 20 years. As such, for all its reliability issues, Sharp R-930 Convection Microwave is still worth its price, if you’re focusing at the brighter side. And it is bright when it comes to features and how each of them is able to cook.

Sharp Over The Range Convection Microwave

Filed under Sharp Microwaves by kailing

If you’re looking for a convection microwave in over-the-range style, I recommend this model. Sharp Over The Range Convection Microwave provides excellent cooking from a wide range of features; although there are still flaws which need to be addressed.

Pros: Accommodating design and system, practical interior, speed-cooking and intelligent computing and sensor.

Cons: Dim hood light and noisy ventilation fan.

Sharp 1.1-Cubic-Foot 850-Watt Over-the-Range Convection Microwave

Sharp 1.1-Cubic-Foot 850-Watt Over-the-Range Convection Microwave

Accommodating Designs and System

Comes in colors of white (R-1871), black (R-1870/R-1875), bisque (R-1872) and stainless steel (R-1874, premium price), the design suits various contemporary kitchen backdrops. At 1.1 cubic feet, though, the capacity is considered small. Catering to various kitchen designs too is a built-in exhaust system, from which heat dissipates horizontally or vertically, depending on the position of the microwave and its surroundings.

Practical Interior

With a 13-inch ceramic turntable, thorough cooking is ensured. Yet for oversized dishes like a fat, delicious turkey or oblong breads, the rotation can be switched off, providing flexibility for foods which can be cooked. Besides, its 2-level baking allows you to broil and bake at the same time, although professionals pointed out that broiling is better in standard convection ovens.

Best Feature – Speed-cooking

The real highlight of Sharp Over The Range Convection Microwave is the speed-cooking. Combining convection power with microwave energy, cooking is quickened by ½ or a third of that of conventional cooking with as good or better results. Not only that. With temperatures ranging from 100° to 450° Fahrenheit, it roasts and grills perfectly.

Intelligent Computing and Sensor

As for its cooking functions, they are aided by a computing system which detects the required cooking periods and then adjusts the temperature accordingly. Another intelligent feature is Smart & Easy Sensor Settings in which the system, just to single out one function, determines reheating times and set the appropriate power levels from 11 available levels, preventing waste of electricity usage.

Dim Hood Lights and Noisy Ventilation Fan

Nonetheless, there are problems with hood light and 2-speed ventilation fan. The incandescent light bulbs aren’t bright enough to let you peek at a cooking process. But even if they were a Sun, you wouldn’t want to stand beside the oven as the fan is loud, very loud, even with the lower speed among the provided two.

Conclusion

Despite its frailties, most users are satisfied with its cooking abilities and how quick it can be done. Minimal reliability issues have been reported, and Sharp’s confidence in granting a 6-year warranty for magnetron tube tells much about the pedigree of Sharp Over The Range Convection Microwave.

Sharp R-305KS – Best Mid-Sized Microwave Oven

Filed under Sharp Microwaves by Reese

More often than not, small microwave ovens receive not very favourable ratings. So why not take a look at a medium-size microwave oven? After all, when you are looking for a medium-size microwave oven, what you would really want is a microwave oven that does the basic tasks efficiently. I present to you Sharp R-305KS Microwave Oven as the best mid-sized microwave oven. Especially good if you’re looking for one to fit in the new built-in shelf, Sharp R-305KS heats perfectly, has safety lock ability, is a performer, classy looking, fast, compact and easy to clean.

Sharp R-305KS Microwave

Best Uses
1) Heats Perfectly
- There have been countless positive reviewers who were happy with the heating.
- E.g. Takes 45 seconds to boil a cup of water or takes approximately 3 minute to cook oatmeal at 50% power.

2) Safety Lock Ability
- Especially valuable if you have children.
- No more worries about your child getting hurt or your microwave oven getting spoilt.

3) Performer
- With 6 cook options, 6 reheat options and 4 defrost options; it is certainly a performer for those in a jiffy.
- Best used for quick re-heating dishes such as beverages, pizza, rolls & muffins.
- Defrost better than expected for a medium-size microwave oven.
- There is a clock too!

4) Classy Looking
- With its compact stainless steel design, this sleek look can’t go wrong.

5) Fast
- It heats everything very well, fast and evenly.
- Most users use this for reheating leftovers, coffee and making popcorn!

6) Compact
- Does not take all of the limited counter space.
- Good for those in need for microwave oven that fits in built-in-shelf or who has a small kitchen area.

7) Easy to Clean
- Easy to clean both inside and out.
- A note of caution: The stainless skin seems thin. If you wipe the door on the outside with a dish towel, it might leave scratch marks.
- Solution? Exercise caution when cleaning the outside. Use a very soft, damp cloth and try not to rub too aggressively.

Downsides
1) Broken
- Some found that only after a few months use, their microwave ovens seem to have broken. (E.g. buttons failed to operate, timer does not work, etc.)
- There was one dangerous experience where the microwave oven turned itself on while unattended!!
- However, considering the price, I’d say this is more of a manufacturing discrepancy as not all buyers experience this same problem.

2) Not Every Part is Stainless Steel
- Only the front portion is stainless steel.
- The rest is painted silvery-gray with dashes of black accents.

3) Inferior Quality
- Opening and closing the door makes loud noises
- More importantly, the door seems fragile and there is a possibility that it might break.

4) Confusing Instruction Booklet
- Takes quite a while to understand it.
- Solution? Read a few times and it should help.

5) Cheap Turntable Mechanism
- It’s generally all right for the price you’re paying.

Sharp R-305KS Microwave Oven gets the job done if all you want from your microwave oven is to heat up your leftovers, baby food and soup. No doubt, it has its fair share of problems, but what can you expect from a price below $100? After all, Sharp R-305KS heats perfectly, has safety lock ability, is a performer, classy looking, fast, compact and easy to clean.

Sharp R-820JS Microwave Oven – Best Convection Microwave Oven

Filed under Sharp Microwaves by Reese

Own a small apartment? Want to eat in but clueless on the cooking process? Sharp R-820JS Microwave Oven is an all-in-one kitchen appliance. It is a conventional microwave, a convection unit and/or a toaster oven all-in-one. Rated as the best convection microwave oven, it is extremely versatile, compact, fast, efficient, safe, heats consistently, easy to clean and saves the use of air-conditioner.

Sharp R-820JS Microwave

Best Uses
1) Extremely Versatile
- Performs a job of three:
- A conventional microwave
- A convection unit
- A toaster oven
- In fact, it does more than just those three uses through its non-microwave functions.
- The Compu-serve setting is a miracle.
- E.g. You can grill a burger, golden French fries, steaks, fish & poultry or roast a chicken, turkey & pork loin or even bake crispy biscuits, chewy brownies & microwave pizza.

2) Compact
- Phenomenally useful for a small kitchen
- Much better than heating up a full-size oven

3) Fast
- Small batches of crispy or fried things can be heated in less than half the time!
- Quicker than a big oven or an old toaster oven.
- When it comes to dinner, the faster the better 

4) Easy Clean-Up
- The turntable and the pedestal should come right out and can go in the dishwasher (they’re both metal) if you’re pressed for time.
- Then, there’s nothing left to do but to wipe inside the oven since a lower range element like in an electric oven flips up and out of the way.
- No scrubbing, no huffing!
- Since the interior consist of shiny metal, just wipe away with a sponge and it’ll be gleaming in no time.

5) Efficient
- The grill function is flawless thanks to the Double Grill convection technology.
- How to make the most of it?
- For rapid warm-ups, use it as a microwave oven
- For roasting and baking, use it as a conventional oven
- Tip? Change the convection mode for the last 5 minutes if you’re making pizza; adding crispiness to the dough for a more conventional taste & natural crust.

6) Consistent Heat
- Instead of heating element, the heat convection makes life easy.
- E.g. Very good for setting yeast bread to rise. Just set the oven on 100 and put in a cup of water for extra humidity.
- However, length of time varies & some adjustment may be needed for different food to reach the right amount of browning.

7) Saves the Use of Air-Conditioner
- Even if you don’t have an air-conditioned apartment, you can still bake and roast to your heart’s content all summer.
- No worries about heating up the entire apartment.
- No spike in air conditioning bills either!

8) Safe
- The exhaust above the top of the unit (from the fan) may be warm but the unit remains touchable.
- Nevertheless, my recommendation is to abide by the recommended clearance on the top in the guide.
- If there is still a necessity to store things, try to not to put perishable items or stuff that would suffer from heat.

Downsides
1) Manufacturing Defect
- Crimped sheet metal, a minimum number of screws and cheap plastic snap-ins securing too many vital components.
- A number of failure rates reviewed for this particular model.
- Remarks: One of the more major problems

2) Weak Design
- Omission of humidity sensor which automatically reheats dishes or stops when the water boils or shuts off when it detects the dish that is done heating.
- In its place, there are only reheat presets which may not be adequate for some.
- Remarks: Not very problematic since the invaluable Compu settings more than make up for it. Just impute the correct weight to get the desired doneness for your food.

3) Wobbly Turntable
- The turntable always spins
- Remarks: A minor annoyance

4) Difficulty Reading LCD Display
- If you are too tall, the screen can’t be seen too well.
- A normal counter top should give a perfect view of screen if you are between 5’2″ and 5’9″
- Solution? Step back to get a good view
- Remarks: Big irritant for tall people.

5) Lengthy Pre-heat Time
- Takes a fair bit of time to pre-heat dishes with LOW HEIGHT.
- Solution? Invert a dinner plate on the revolving plate to increase the height.
- Remarks: You’ll have a greater capacity of patience thanks to this!

6) Popcorn Problem
- Some have problem popping all the corn.
- Solution? Follow the instructions exactly. Turn the pie plate upside down for the popcorn to cook correctly.
- Remarks: A matter of reading and doing as the instructions say.

7) Restart Programming
- If you mess up one entry in the multi process cooking inputs, you’d have to start all over with the programming.
- Remarks: Not many complaints received on this.

8) Huge Vent Fan
- Huge vent fan extends 5 inches in the back.
- Remarks: Some customers prefer it to be smaller but it is not much of a hindrance when coming to choose this model.

Truly, while some parts of the build quality may be a concern, there are very few ovens that I am aware of that offer as much functionality and flexibility of the ‘Compu’ functions to bake, roast, microwave and grill. In fact, where else can you get such a readily accessible and multi-functional microwave oven at this kind of price?

Great for a single person or if you live in a very small space, this is a fine substitute to a full-size oven. I present to you the best convection microwave oven, Sharp R-820JS Microwave Oven which is extremely versatile, compact, safe, fast, efficient, heats consistently, easy to clean and saves the use of air-conditioner.

Panasonic Genius NN-H765 BF Microwave Oven – Best Microwave Oven

Filed under Panasonic Microwaves by Reese

The Panasonic NN-H765 is a microwave oven measuring 19-7/16 by 21-7/8 by 11-15/16 inches with a 1-3/5 cubic foot capacity and 1250 watts of power. It comes with many great features that make preparing a meal easy and simple. I bought mine about 2 years ago and have little issues with it. The original idea that attracted me to purchase the Panasonic NN-H765 is its big space. There aren’t many good microwave ovens with this size or this price.

Panasonic Genius NN-H765BF Microwave

Unlike most microwave ovens available in the market today, the Panasonic NN-H765 comes with an automated turntable which is very useful as it ensures the food is evenly heated. With this function, I no longer have to worry about the food being hot on the outside and cold on the inside. Another feature that goes well with the above mentioned one is the Inverter Turbo Defrost. This is my first microwave oven that has such a feature. It basically allows me to defrost my frozen food in the microwave itself. I was quite skeptical about this feature at first but after many experiments, I now use it almost all the time. It is a really great function that I think all microwave ovens should have.

Another key feature that the Panasonic NN-H765 has is the one touch sensor. This feature will automatically adjust power levels and cooking periods. This is convenient when reheating and cooking many types of food. It also cooks faster than other microwave ovens due to its high power. This saves time when cooking. Besides all these, this microwave comes with a free recipe book that contains many recipes and how tos. It has been really useful. Do not that it is best to keep the instructor manual as well because any technical terms in the recipe book that you don’t understand can be found in the instructor manual.

As good as it sounds, it also has some drawbacks. I find this oven to be a little noisy sometimes, but it isn’t unbearable. The oven is also quite heavy. I once had to shift it and had to ask my neighbor to help me carry it. Other than that, I don’t have any complains about the Panasonic NN-H765.

All in all, the Panasonic NN-H765 is a great microwave oven to have. I highly recommend it to families as the wide space will prove to be very useful.

Panasonic 0.8-Cubic-Foot Microwave

Filed under Panasonic Microwaves by Reese

A cute little microwave for basic microwaving, the Panasonic 0.8-Cubic-Foot Microwave is just right for college students or a bachelor staying alone.

Panasonic 0.8-Cubic-Foot Microwave, Stainless Steel

Everything is simple and easy with this microwave oven. It can fit a full size plate comfortably, perfect for reheating leftovers, and cooks food with a cook button too.

There are no fancy functions with this microwave, except for a popcorn key. And when the food is done, it beeps five times to tell you that. Extra functions meant that you have to pay for them, so if you don’t need them, this is the microwave oven to get.

Panasonic 0.8-Cubic-Foot Microwave uses a pop out dial for the timer instead of keypad, which can be a good and a bad. Generally dials last longer than keypads, but you’ll have to look at the display to check how much time you’ve turned on the dial. If the LCD screen fails one day, it’ll all be guesswork.

This is what an Amazon reviewer has to say about the dial:

“the dial on this machine feels like the volume control on a fine stereo system. It’s heavy and smooth, with satisfying, almost subliminal haptic ticks. No cheap plastic egg-timer hand feel” - Christina Allen

Speaking of the LCD display, quite a few users said that it is difficult to read the display at most angles except looking straight at it, making it a pain to use if it is sitting on the countertop because you’ll have to bend down. Some of them recommend placing this microwave at eye level, but there is also one user who claims that she didn’t have any problem reading the display at any angle.

Panasonic 0.8-Cubic-Foot Microwave is a sweet and affordable microwave oven. Click the link to see the best price.
