Thanksgiving dinner isn’t the easiest, so I always look for ways to reduce both the stress and the hassle of preparing it. One of the easiest ways to do this is to cook your sweet potatoes (or yams) in the dang microwave. Unless you’re making sweet potato fries or any other dish of diced, sliced, or chopped sweet potatoes that is all about crispness or browning, there is no reason to waste the time and energy it takes to make whole or even halved sweet potatoes to roast in your stove.

Especially when the microwave is right there and the result is exactly the same. It’s easy to make: just wash your sweet tubers and poke a few holes in them with a fork, then place them on a paper towel or microwaveable plate and microwave on full power for five minutes, doing half the cooking time run through. Check the doneness by pricking each sweet potato with a paring knife. If the blade slides through easily, you’re done. If there is any resistance to the blade, microwave it for another minute. Repeat until the knife moves through the potato like butter. (Then eat it with butter.)

The more potatoes you have in the microwave, the longer it will take, but it doesn’t take nearly as long as cooking in the oven (at least 45 minutes, but usually an hour).

Once the sweet potatoes (or yams) are tender, you can eat them as is or with butter and salt, or you can scrape out their insides to make sweet potato tart, a kind of porridge, or sweet potato casserole. There’s really no need to turn on the stove; I heard that the stove could be filled differently anyway.
